Maurizio Murgia is professor of finance at the Faculty of Economics and Management of the Free University of Bolzano-Bozen (FUB) in Italy since October 2000. He is also the Faculty Research Cluster Leader in Financial Markets and Regulation.\r\n\r\nMaurizio Murgia was the first Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management of FUB from 2000 to 2005 and designed and developed the multilingual infrastructure in teaching and research that is its unique characteristic. In 2006-2007 he was a Visiting Scholar at Stern School of Business of New York University in USA.

In 2009-2012 he has served for a second mandate as Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management of FUB. In 2011-2012 he was a member of the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR), to review and evaluate the research output in the fields of business and finance (GEV 13).\r\nHis previous academic appointments have been at Cass Business School, City University of London, UK (1998-2000), and at the Department of Business of University of Pavia in Italy (1985-1998). He also held graduate and post-graduate teaching appointments at University Ca’ Foscari in Venice, ALMA Business School University of Bologna, and LUISS University in Rome.
His current research focuses on market microstructure, on restructuring global megabanks, on the links between payout policy and equity issues, and on competitive effects of venture capital financing and investing activities.\r\nHis research in corporate finance and financial markets has been published in several international journals including the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Banking and Finance and Brooking-Wharton Papers in Financial Services. In 2000 he was awarded the Iddo Sarnat Memorial Award by the Journal of Banking and Finance for his paper on European Bank Mergers.

He has acted as a consultant to financial institutions in Italy and UK, and is a frequent speaker at international conferences and professional meetings.\r\nMaurizio Murgia holds a bachelor’s degree in economics (cum laude) from University of Cagliari in Italy, a MBA from Business School (SDA) of Bocconi University in Italy, and a doctorate in Finance and Capital Markets from a Consortium of Italian Universities (Bergamo, Catholic Milan, LUISS and Modena) jointly developed with Salomon Brothers Center for the study of Financial Institutions at the Graduate School of Business of New York University, where he has been a Visiting Ph.D. Student.  Maurizio Murgia has also obtained a CPA Certification (Dottore Commercialista) and has been on the Italian Association Roll from 1979 to 1998.
Beside academic life, Maurizio’s great achievement has been to obtain the sailor skipper certificate by the Centro Velico Caprera (North-East of Sardinia), the most prestigious sailing school of the Mediterranean. His nautical miles track record is currently about 10K across the Mediterranean.
